Overactivity, often linked to ADHD or sensory processing sensitivities, isn’t just “high energy”—it’s a challenge in Inhibitory Control. In a group therapy setting, children are placed in a micro-society where they must navigate the “social brake system.” From a developmental standpoint, being around peers provides the natural “just-right” challenge where they must wait their turn, filter out distractions, and modulate their physical movements to match the group’s flow.

Neurologically, group therapy targets the Prefrontal Cortex, the area responsible for executive functions. While a child might be able to sit still one-on-one with a therapist, doing so while a peer is laughing or playing nearby requires a much higher level of neurological regulation. In our Al Nahda facility, we use structured play and cooperative games to help children “feel” the speed of their own engines and learn how to shift gears effectively.

The “Stop-Light” Body Awareness Game

Practice “Red Light, Green Light” at home, but add a “Yellow Light” for slow-motion movement. This teaches your child to consciously monitor their Proprioceptive Input (sense of body position). Use this in the park or even in the hallway of your Sharjah apartment building to help them learn that they have “gears” they can control.

Specialist FAQ

  • Won’t my child just get more hyper around other kids? Initially, energy may rise, but our therapists use “co-regulation” techniques to bring the group back to a baseline, teaching them how to calm down after excitement.
  • What is the ideal group size? We keep our Al Nahda groups small (typically 3 to 5 children) to ensure every child gets the clinical attention they need while still having social peers.
  • Is this better than one-on-one therapy? It’s a different tool. One-on-one builds the skill; group therapy is where the child “stress-tests” that skill in a real-world social environment.
