For children on the autism spectrum, independence is often hindered by challenges in Executive Functioning and Adaptive Skills. Tasks that seem “automatic” to others—like dressing for school or organizing a backpack for a trip to a Dubai theme park—require a complex sequence of motor planning and cognitive shifting. Occupational Therapy (OT) breaks these tasks down into manageable, neurologically-sound steps, focusing on the child’s self-efficacy.

Our clinical focus includes Visual Perceptual Skills and Fine Motor Precision. By using Visual Schedules and Task Analysis, we help the child create a mental “map” of daily activities. We also address the sensory components of independence; for example, helping a child tolerate the texture of a school uniform or the noise of a hand dryer, ensuring that sensory barriers don’t stand in the way of their autonomy in the Al Nahda community.

The “Al Nahda 2” Life Skills Challenge

Implement a “Self-Care Station” in your hallway. Place their Sharjah school bag, shoes, and a small visual checklist at their eye level. Instead of doing the task for them to save time in the morning, give them an extra 10 minutes to follow the checklist themselves. This builds praxis (the ability to plan and execute a motor task) and fosters a sense of “I can do it myself,” which is the ultimate goal of autism therapy.

Specialist FAQ

  • Why is my child so good at puzzles but struggles to put on a shirt? This is often due to motor planning Puzzles have a clear visual end-goal, whereas dressing requires complex, multi-step body awareness.
  • What are “Activities of Daily Living” (ADLs)? ADLs are the fundamental skills like eating, dressing, and hygiene. OT focuses on these because they are the “occupation” of a child’s daily life.
  • Will my child ever be fully independent? Every child’s journey is unique, but OT significantly increases the “ceiling” of independence, allowing most children to take a much more active role in their own lives.
