Handwriting is a complex “bottom-up” process requiring visual-motor integration, fine motor precision, and graphomotor planning. If a child has inconsistent letter shapes, it often points to a breakdown in their ability to translate a visual image of a letter into a coordinated hand movement. This is frequently linked to poor “distal control”—the ability to move the fingers independently of the wrist and forearm.

In our Occupational Therapy sessions, we move beyond just “tracing letters.” We work on the underlying biomechanics, such as pencil grip (tripod vs. quadrupod) and paper positioning. For children in Dubai schools following the British or American curriculum, the pressure to write quickly and neatly increases by Year 2/Grade 1. We address the “motor memory” of letter formation so that the child can focus on the content of their writing rather than the mechanics.

The “Sensory Sandbox” Practice

Before using paper, have your child practice “letter paths” in a tray of salt or colorful sand (you can find these at many Al Nahda hobby shops). The high sensory feedback of the sand helps “lock” the letter shape into their motor memory. Encourage them to use their pointer finger first, then a short “golf pencil” to encourage a proper pinch.

Specialist FAQ

  • Why does my child’s handwriting get worse at the end of the page? This is usually “muscle fatigue.” It indicates they may have low muscle tone in their hands or are “death-gripping” the pencil too hard.
  • Is cursive still important in Dubai schools? Many UAE schools still prioritize it. More importantly, cursive can actually be easier for children with certain motor delays because it reduces the number of times the pencil leaves the paper.
  • When is it time to switch to a keyboard? If handwriting is significantly hindering their ability to express thoughts after age 9-10, we may recommend “assistive technology” alongside continued motor work.
