Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)—such as dressing, hygiene, and table manners—are the building blocks of autonomy. While individual therapy is great for skill-acquisition, Group Therapy provides the “social motivation” and “peer modeling” that often accelerates learning. Children are much more likely to try a new vegetable or practice buttoning their shirt when they see their friends in Al Nahda doing the same.
Our group sessions simulate real-world environments. We practice “The Dubai Mall Manners” (waiting in line, staying with the group) and “Lunchbox Independence” (opening containers, cleaning up spills). The group dynamic also helps with sensory processing, as children learn to perform these tasks despite the noise and presence of others—a crucial skill for the inclusive classrooms common in the UAE.
The “Family Restaurant” Rehearsal
Turn your Friday dinner into a “rehearsal.” Set the table together and practice specific ADLs: pouring water without spilling, using a napkin, and asking to be excused. If you’re heading to a café in Sharjah later, give them the “job” of handing the money to the cashier. These small “group” responsibilities at home reinforce the habits we build in the clinic.
Specialist FAQ
- My child is shy; will they benefit from a group? Yes! We match groups based on temperament. Often, “observers” learn just as much as “leaders” through social modeling.
- What ages are the groups for? We have “Little Explorers” (ages 3-5) and “Life Skills Prep” (ages 6-10 and 11+).
- What if my child has a meltdown in the group? Our therapists are trained to handle this. A meltdown is just another “teachable moment” for the whole group about empathy and regulation.
