Language development is a complex dance between the Wernicke’s area (understanding) and Broca’s area (production) of the brain. When a child struggles to acquire language, it impacts their ability to learn, socialize, and express their basic needs. Therapy focuses on expanding “receptive” language (what they understand) and “expressive” language (what they say). We use evidence-based strategies like Aided Language Stimulation and Expansion to meet the child at their current level and pull them toward the next.

In our Sharjah and Dubai clinics, we also account for the bilingual or multilingual households common in the UAE. We help parents understand that while their child might be exposed to multiple languages, the goal of therapy is to build a “strong foundation” in their primary language first, which then serves as a scaffold for others. We work on everything from basic vocabulary to the complex grammar required for the UAE national curriculum.

The “Plus-One” Expansion Rule

A powerful tool for parents is the “Plus-One” rule. Whatever your child says, repeat it back to them and add one more word. If they say “Car,” you say “Blue car.” If they say “Go park,” you say “Go park now.” This consistently models the next level of language development without overwhelming them or making them feel “corrected.”

Specialist FAQ

  • Should we stop speaking our native language and only use English?

No. Research shows that a strong “mother tongue” foundation actually helps with second language acquisition. Speak the language you are most comfortable and fluent in at home.

  • Is my child just a “Late Talker”?

Some children are, but a language delay can also be a sign of underlying auditory processing issues or other developmental needs. An assessment provides the answer.

  • How does screen time in Dubai affect language?

Passive screen time (watching YouTube) does not build language. Language is built through interaction. We help you replace “screen time” with “connection time.”
