Neurodevelopmental Treatment (NDT) is a hands-on clinical approach used to “re-wire” the way the brain sends signals to the muscles. Often, children develop “compensatory habits”—like W-sitting or toe-walking—because their Postural Control or core strength is underdeveloped. If left unaddressed, these habits can lead to orthopedic issues or delays in gross motor skills like running at the park or participating in PE at their Sharjah school.
The therapist uses specific “Handling Points” to guide the child’s body into more functional alignment. By inhibiting abnormal movement patterns and facilitating “normal” ones, we tap into Neuroplasticity. This is especially important during the early years when the brain is most adaptable. In our Al Nahda 2 clinic, we ensure that every movement a child makes is building a foundation for the complex motor tasks they will face as they grow.
The “Animal Walk” Core Strengthener
Encourage your child to “Bear Walk” (hands and feet on the floor, hips high) across the living room. This builds Shoulder Girdle Stability and core strength, which are the foundations for fine motor skills like writing and gross motor habits like proper walking alignment.
Specialist FAQ
- Why is W-sitting bad? It creates a wide base of support that allows the child to “switch off” their core muscles, which can lead to hip instability and delayed balance.
- My child walks on their toes; is that a habit or a problem? It can be both. We assess if it’s a sensory preference, a tight Achilles tendon, or a vestibular (balance) issue to provide the right correction.
- How many sessions are needed? Motor habits take time to change. Usually, a 3-to-6-month block of consistent NDT is recommended to see lasting functional changes.
